Puppy Left Alone in the Woods with His Bed and Toys Hoped Someone Would Find Him

Hank once had a family, but they abandoned him deep in the woods. Left behind with a broken leg, a bag of food he couldn’t open, his bed, and a few worn toys, the young puppy faced a heartbreaking struggle for survival.

One day, a compassionate passerby came across Hank lying motionless on his dog bed. The sight was devastating. At just 8 months old, Hank was enduring unimaginable pain and fear. The Good Samaritan immediately contacted the local animal shelter to get help for the suffering pup.

“Only a puppy, yet he has endured so much. When he realized he was being taken to the vet, his tail began to wag,” Humans and Animals United wrote on Facebook. “We can’t understand how anyone could leave him like this—with a broken leg, his bed, toys, and food in the woods. Whoever you are, please know Hank is now safe and will never be harmed again.”

At first, rescuers worried that Hank might lash out due to being in survival mode. But to their surprise, he was nothing but gentle and affectionate. “From the moment they picked him up, he only showed love,” said Rosa Fond, founder of Humans and Animals United, in an interview with The Dodo. “Everyone agrees he’s one of the sweetest dogs they’ve ever met.”

Veterinarians soon confirmed the extent of Hank’s injuries: his leg had been broken for more than two weeks, leaving him unable to move from his bed without excruciating pain. He required complex surgery, and there were concerns he might be euthanized due to the severity of his condition. Thankfully, Humans and Animals United stepped in to ensure Hank received the lifesaving treatment he desperately needed.

Before surgery, however, Hank had to regain strength. Severely underweight and malnourished, he was carefully fed small, frequent meals. It is believed he had been left alone in the woods for around two weeks. As Hank’s story spread online, the outpouring of love and support was overwhelming, with donations flooding in to cover the cost of his surgery and recovery.

Hank’s first operation was a success, but he still has a long road ahead. He remains very thin, his ribs and bones still visible, and he continues to receive extra meals to help him regain a healthy weight. He is currently staying in a temporary foster home and will soon transition to a specialized foster family who can meet his ongoing medical needs. Once Hank is fully recovered, he will be ready for adoption.

Dozens of families have already expressed interest in giving Hank his forever home, though no decision has been made yet. “We are so grateful to the Good Samaritan who found him and to everyone who has contributed to his care,” the rescue organization shared. “We know Hank’s future will be filled with love and happiness from now on.”
