It was raining hard—the kind that soaks your socks fast. Everyone rushed by, heads down.
Except the kid.
He couldn’t have been more than five. Blue hat with a pom-pom, soaked shoes, crouched by a storefront.
He’d found a cat. Wet, still, alone.
Without saying a word, he held his tiny umbrella over it. No adult around.
Then, carefully, he propped the umbrella by the window and tucked a napkin underneath.
It was a note:
“For you to stay dry. I hope your person comes back.”
I couldn’t walk away.
I waited. No one came. I took the cat home.
I named it “Pom-Pom.” Fed it, cared for it.
Weeks later, a woman saw us. “Is that Mittens?” she asked, tearfully. It was her son’s cat—the boy with the blue hat.
His small act of kindness brought the cat back home.
