When my 22-year-old son Xavier called to tell me he was engaged to a woman named Danielle after only three months together, I was surprised but tried to be supportive. He wanted to bring her over for dinner that weekend, so my husband Nathan and I went all out preparing for their visit. But the moment I opened the door and saw Danielle, my excitement quickly faded. I thought I recognized her — months earlier, my friend Margaret had shown me a photo of a woman who had scammed her son, stealing money and disappearing.
