THE K9 WOULDN’T LEAVE HIS SIDE—EVEN AT THE FUNERAL

I didn’t expect to cry like that—not in front of everyone. But when Rex, my uncle Mateo’s retired K9 partner, jumped onto the casket and whimpered, something in me broke.

Uncle Mateo was a tough combat vet. Rex, a black German Shepherd, had saved his life more than once. They stayed inseparable—through military tours, search-and-rescue missions, and even civilian life. When Mateo died from a heart condition, we knew Rex would take it hard. But I wasn’t prepared for what he did at the funeral.

As the casket was wheeled in, Rex walked over slowly. Then he leapt onto it, laid down, and whimpered, resting his head on the folded flag. The crowd fell silent. Some cried. Even the priest paused. Then Rex began pawing at the casket, as if trying to reach him.

The funeral director tried to pull him off, but I stepped in. “Don’t you dare,” I said. Rex needed that moment—and everyone gave it to him. When he finally climbed down, he limped to me and pressed against my knees. I knew then: he couldn’t be left behind.

At the reception, Rex stayed quiet. My mom gently said, “He needs someone.” And I realized—I could be that someone. Mateo was like a second father to me. Taking care of Rex felt like continuing his legacy.

When I brought Rex home, he was heartbroken. He barely ate. He looked for Mateo everywhere. So I took him back to the ranch where he’d trained with my uncle. As we arrived, something sparked in him. I gave the old command: “Avanza.” Move forward.

Rex sprang into action, leaping over obstacles like old times. It was the first sign of life I’d seen in him since the funeral—and in myself. That day, we started healing together.

Months later, we attended a ceremony at a new K9 training center named after Uncle Mateo. Veterans shared stories. I told them about how Mateo rescued Rex and gave him a second chance. Now, Rex and I give each other that same gift every day.

“Avanza” became more than a command. It became our reminder—to keep moving forward, carrying love and loyalty through the grief. Some losses never fade, but the bonds we share can light the way through the darkest times.
