Life in Hell

Caesar, a brown bear in China, spent years trapped on a bile farm. She was “bound in a restrictive metal vest” and drained of bile “24 hours a day.” Her captors even used a spike-lined vest to stop her from resisting.

Freedom and Healing

In 2004, Animals Asia rescued Caesar. “To see her out in the sunshine… it’s hard to imagine her existence back then,” said Nic Field, director of the rescue team. For 12 years, she enjoyed swimming, sunbathing, and digging.

A Sad Ending, A Call to Action

Despite her rescue, Caesar later died from a tumor caused by years of abuse. “These metal jackets are now illegal,” said Steve Jackson, “but it’s likely that there are still some out there.” Her story is a reminder that the fight to end bile farming continues.
