Bus accident leaves 10 dead and more than 42 inherited, among… See more

The National Conference of Bishops of Brazil expressed solidarity and offered assistance to the pilgrims involved in the incident.On the afternoon of last Friday (05), the Public Security Secretariat (SSP) reported that the

number of deaths in the accident with a tourist bus in Itapetininga, in the interior of SP, rose to 12. The  incorrect information was corrected  by the agency to 10 deaths this Sunday (07). The original version of this article, with the incorrect number, was updated.

In a statement, the SSP apologizes and clarifies: “ In rechecking the number of fatal victims, it was identified that in the Police Report registered by the Civil Police, which contained information about 12 deaths – 10 identified and two ‘unknown’ – the unknown individuals mentioned were already included in the nominal list of deaths.

The accident left 59 victims, ten of whom succumbed. The vehicle collided with the support pillar of an overpass.

The bus was chartered and left the city of Ribeirão Branco, in the interior of São Paulo, bound for the city of Aparecida, also in the interior of the state.

“In this moment of great sadness, we, at the National Conference of Bishops of Brazil, express our solidarity and our most sincere condolences to Dom Eduardo Malaspina, bishop of the diocese of Itapeva, and to the families and friends of the victims,” the organization stated.

The SSP also stated that all forensic examinations were requested and carried out, and the Scientific and Technical Police are working to identify and release the remaining fatal victims.

The case was registered as manslaughter and negligent bodily harm while driving a vehicle. A police investigation was opened to clarify all the circumstances of the incident.
