Koala’s ‘Beautiful’ Gesture To Fallen Friend Causes Rescuers’ Hearts To Break

KOALA RESCUE Inc. in Australia was recently called to check on a koala found lying motionless at the base of a tree. Sadly, the koala had already passed away — but she wasn’t alone.

A second koala, believed to be her companion, was seen embracing her. “It was clear he was comforting her,” said Hartley Head of KOALA RESCUE Inc. “The male koala’s behavior was both heartbreaking and deeply moving.”

The cause of death is unknown, though a fall is suspected. The male koala was healthy and later released, where he climbed a nearby tree and watched as rescuers tended to his companion.

Such rare moments show the emotional depth animals like koalas can possess, the rescue team noted.
