Andrea Bock was driving through Clam Gulch, Alaska, when traffic stopped. A moose and her calf were trying to cross the highway, but the tired calf couldn’t get over the guardrail. The mother, separated from her baby, was growing anxious.Bock watched for about 20 minutes as the calf tried to find the end of the guardrail, but the mother kept guiding him back to a spot without cars.
Joe Tate, also stuck in traffic, decided to help. After about 30 minutes, he saw an opportunity when the mother was on the other side of the road. With traffic blocking her view, Tate quickly picked up the calf and placed him over the guardrail.
Though wild moose can be dangerous, Tate and his friends had a plan to distract the mother with a trailer. The calf, exhausted, didn’t resist and let himself be helped.
Thanks to Tate, the calf was reunited with his mother and the two safely crossed the road. “It could have gone badly,” Tate said, “but it was worth the risk.”
