MY DOG DESTROYED MY ENTIRE MAGAZINE COLLECTION—AND I DON’T KNOW HOW TO REACT

I’ve been collecting rare magazines since I was fifteen—special editions, unique covers, and limited issues. One evening, I returned home to find my living room in total chaos. My prized collection was destroyed, shredded paper everywhere. And there, in the middle of the wreckage, was Milo, my golden retriever, tail wagging as if he’d just won a prize.

I was devastated. Milo had never done anything like this before, and as I sifted through the ruins, I noticed something strange—he had been searching for something. Then I remembered: I had once hidden a photo of me and my late uncle between the pages of one magazine. I scoured the torn papers, but the photo was gone.

I called my friend Karina, who suggested Milo might have been bored or curious. The next day, I took him to the vet—he was fine, but the mystery remained. Days later, I received a rare magazine I had ordered before the incident. Milo sniffed it but didn’t destroy it. I realized then that I wasn’t just mourning the loss of my collection, but the memories tied to it.

I decided to search again for the photo, and eventually found it hidden behind the bookshelf. Milo had unknowingly led me to rediscover that precious memory.

From then on, I focused less on the rarity of the items I collected and more on the connections they represented—memories with people, places, and even pets. And I learned that sometimes losing things creates space to remember what really matters.

Milo’s chaos reminded me: experiences and memories last far longer than any object.
