From Rescue Pup to International Star

Norbert’s story began in 2009 when Julie Steines adopted him as a four-month-old puppy. The unique mixed-breed dog, weighing just 3 pounds, quickly became a cherished member of her family. By the time he was one year old, Julie had trained him to become a certified therapy dog, a role that would define his life and legacy.

For 13 years, Norbert worked tirelessly to bring smiles to people’s faces. He was a regular visitor at the Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, where he was celebrated as the tiniest therapy dog in the Amerman Family Foundation Dog Therapy Program. His small size and droopy tongue made him instantly recognizable and adored by everyone he met.

A Social Media Sensation

Norbert’s impact extended far beyond his in-person visits. With over 820,000 followers on Instagram, he became an internet sensation, spreading joy and positivity to fans worldwide. His adorable photos and videos, often featuring his signature high-five, earned him appearances on shows like Today and Good Morning America.

Through his social media presence, Norbert built a global community of fans who found comfort and inspiration in his tiny but mighty spirit.

A Legacy of Giving Back

Norbert’s influence wasn’t limited to smiles and social media. He and Julie co-authored several children’s books, sharing his message of kindness and compassion with young readers. He also graced the covers of magazines like Animal Wellness Magazine and FIDO Friendly, further cementing his status as a beloved icon.

In addition, Norbert’s likeness was turned into a huggable plush toy, which became a symbol of comfort for many. Julie and Norbert donated over 4,500 of these plush toys to the Marine Toys for Tots Foundation and other charities supporting children in need.

“You Don’t Have to Be Big to Make a BIG Difference”

Julie Steines reflected on Norbert’s incredible life in her heartfelt tribute, writing, “Adopting him forever changed my life for the better in unimaginable ways. At only 3 pounds, he showed us all the importance of making others smile. He lived his belief that you don’t have to be big to make a BIG difference in the world.”

Norbert’s legacy will live on through the countless lives he touched, both in person and online. His community, lovingly called the “Norberthood,” continues to celebrate his life and the joy he brought to so many.

A Final Goodbye

As fans mourn the loss of Norbert, his spirit remains a reminder of the power of love, kindness, and the difference one small dog can make in the world. Julie’s words capture it best: “Norbert made this world a better place, and his spirit will live on through our smiles in his community, the Norberthood.”

Rest in peace, Norbert. You may have been small in size, but your impact was immeasurable.
