The gate creaked softly as Linda Koebner stepped forward, her heart pounding in her chest.
Two decades had passed since she last walked this path — since she’d said goodbye to the chimpanzees who had once been her world.

The air smelled the same — of earth and leaves and sunlight filtering through the trees.
But everything else felt heavier, slower.
Time had marched on.

She didn’t know if they would remember her.

How could they? Twenty years was a lifetime.
