The Heartwarming Reunion: Pit Bull Missing for Eight Years Returns Home
Microchips have reunited countless pets with their families, but unfortunately, they aren’t always checked right away. This was the case for Harley, a Pit Bull who went missing for eight years, despite having an up-to-date microchip.
His family never stopped hoping for his return, and their patience and perseverance eventually paid off in the most heartwarming way.

Harley’s journey began in February 2014, when Betsy Dehaan let her dogs out at her Florida home. In just a brief moment, the dogs ran into the nearby woods. Dehaan followed them, but Harley had disappeared. At only a few years old, Harley was young and full of energy. Despite searching tirelessly and posting missing pet posters, Dehaan couldn’t find him. She hoped someone would eventually scan his microchip and return him.
“We searched and posted missing pet posters. We never stopped looking,” Dehaan recalled.

Years passed without any sightings, and the family feared the worst. Still, they never gave up. One morning, eight years after Harley had gone missing, Dehaan was reminiscing about her beloved dog when an unexpected message arrived. Someone texted her, saying they had found her long-lost pet, and he was at Lee County Domestic Animal Services.
Initially, Dehaan thought it was a prank. “I’m like, ‘is this a scam?’ Because we were talking about him that morning,” she said. However, it was no trick. Angie Bray, a kind-hearted individual, had found the severely malnourished pup and brought him to Cypress Lake Animal Hospital, where staff scanned his microchip and got Dehaan’s contact information.

“It made me cry. It was just so heartbreaking to think about being torn away from my animals and unable to find them,” Bray said, recalling the emotional moment.
Though Dehaan had since moved from Florida to Missouri, she didn’t let the distance deter her. Without hesitation, she drove over 1,000 miles to pick up Harley. Even before seeing him, Dehaan was overwhelmed with emotion, crying as she anticipated their long-awaited reunion.

When a staff member brought Harley out, his tail wagged wildly, and he showered Dehaan with kisses. Though he was older and grayer, his love for his family remained as strong as ever.
Harley’s story is a testament to the importance of microchipping pets. It serves as a reminder that even after years of being lost, a simple microchip can help bring a beloved pet home. To ensure the best chance of reunion, always keep your pet’s tag and microchip information up to date.

This incredible reunion shows that hope and persistence can lead to heartwarming miracles, no matter how much time has passed.
