The stray dog, with his body covered in mange and scars, and with sad eyes, had no one who wanted to approach him.
On the forgotten streets of a slum, amidst garbage bags and cars driving by, a dog walked slowly, almost invisible to the world. His body was covered in mange, with open wounds and old scars that spoke of a painful past. He had no fur, no strength, and no hope. But what was most painful to see… were his eyes. Sad, tired eyes that seemed to ask,
“Why does no one love me?”
No one approached. Some drove him away with shouts or stones. Others simply ignored him, as if his suffering didn’t exist. Day after day, the dog wandered, looking for a spot of shade, a bit of food, a kind gesture… but finding nothing.
But one day, luck changed.
Lucía, a young volunteer with a local shelter, saw him huddled next to a post. “He was trembling, not from the cold, but from fear. He was in so much pain in his body… and even more so in his soul,” she recalls, moved.
She called him gently, offering him water and a piece of bread. At first, he hesitated. But finally, he took a step… the first toward a new life.
Today, thanks to veterinary treatment, patience, and love, that dog no longer walks alone. His name is Esperanzo and he lives in a foster home where he has finally learned what it means to be loved.
“He wasn’t a bad or dangerous dog. He was just sick and sad. Like many, he just needed someone to believe in him.”
concludes Lucia.
