Dog named ‘thinnest RSPCA has ever seen’ is almost ready for re-homing after recovery

An abandoned dog which was described as the thinnest the RSPCA had ever seen is almost well enough to be re-homed, according to the charity.

Peanut the three-year-old lurcher was found alone down a country lane in Biggleswade in Bedfordshire on New Year’s Day and taken to the emergency vet.

She had pressure sores on her legs, indicating she had been lying on hard surfaces for long periods.

After six weeks in the care of the RSPCA in Cambridgeshire, her condition has improved and she is almost ready to be re-homed.

When she was found on 1 January, kennel supervisor Tiffany Saunders said: “It was heartbreaking to see how emaciated Peanut was and that she was covered in pressure sores which we think are a result of her lying on hard surfaces for a long time.”

Since then, staff at the RSPCA Block Fen Centre in Cambridgeshire have carefully managed her weight gain.

She has put on 7kg and staff say she is a “much healthier weight”.

Staff at the centre said they had been “overwhelmed” by gifts and cards since Peanut first appeared on ITV1’s GMB programme in January.

People have sent bags of food, medical supplies and left cards and toys at the doors of the centre.

Tiffany Saunders, the Kennel Supervisor, said “its amazing” to see the progress that Peanut has made.

She said: “To think back to the dog who couldn’t even get up by herself to see her now, she’s got so much energy.

“We’ve seen her playing, eating her meals really well. We’re just so thrilled to see how well she’s doing.

“We’ve had piles left at our door, we’ve had people driving down to see us with gifts. We’ve had cards, vouchers, money and cheques.

“Because she’s making such good progress, we’re hoping in the next few days we can start getting her ready for rehoming and by the end of the week, we’ll have her advertised.”
